UK Leads the Global Wind Turbine Industry

The turbine industry in the UK has long been of the largest and most advanced sectors in the world. As the home of many world鈥檚 top turbine manufacturers, the UK is also the world鈥檚 largest turbine exporter, especially for wind turbines, gas turbines and turbojets. Today, the UK has evolved and is now the world鈥檚 leading player in wind turbine industry, thanks to its newly launched offshore wind turbines, that will power hundreds of thousands of British homes with green and sustainable energy. With renewable energy being all the rage, the future of wind farms in the UK is looking as promising as ever.

The latest achievement for the UK鈥檚 turbine industry comes as new offshore wind farms deploy over 8mw (megawatt) turbines, which is now in operation in the UK, marking the world鈥檚 first and largest wind turbine farm of its kind – a huge boost for the renewable energy sector. The wind turbine farm, known as Dong Energy’s Burbo Bank Extension, located 7 km off the UK鈥檚 west coast, features 32 units of MHI Vestas V164 -8.0 MW turbines, which is also the first time the huge MHI Vestas turbines have been deployed commercially in the world. This is one of the first and best examples of聽alternative energy taking off, with the United Kingdom leading the way and with many more nations sure to follow.

How UK’s wind turbine industry will save energy?

According to the energy company Dong Energy, the wind turbines deployed in the site stand 195 meters tall with 80-metre blades weighing 35 tonnes each and sweeping the area of over 21,124 square meters. One rotation of each giant turbine can provide enough electricity to power a home for about 29 hours.

“Burbo Bank Extension showcases the rapid innovation in the offshore wind turbine industry.鈥 Dong Energy鈥檚 Chief executive Henrik Poulsen said, “Less than 10 years ago at Burbo Bank, we were the first to install Siemens 3.6mw wind turbines and in this short time, the wind turbines have more than doubled in capacity. Pushing innovation in this way reduces the cost of electricity from offshore wind and will help to advance the offshore wind industry across the world.”

Must Read: Key Facts You Need to Know about UK鈥檚 Manufacturing Sector

Currently, the UK is the world鈥檚 leader in turbojets, turbo propellers, and other gas turbines manufacturing and exports. In 2016, the UK exported $19.6 billion worth of gas turbines, including many airplane turbines, wind turbines, and steam turbines 鈥 nearly 20% of world鈥檚 total turbine exports. Many world-renowned gas turbine companies, such as Rolls-Royce and Siemens gas turbine are all based in the UK.

Renewable energy sources

The ongoing success of the UK鈥檚 turbine industry has helped the country鈥檚 renewable energy sector grow at a steady pace. In 2016, wind farms in the UK generated more electricity than coal powered-plants for the first time, reported by the Guardian. Meanwhile, the UK government has also pledged to phase out coal power by 2025 to meet carbon targets. As the UK鈥檚 turbine industry continues to grow, alongside with the soaring demand in the global market for turbines, the UK鈥檚 wind turbine industry is expected to have a more promising future over the coming years.
